Living Elements: Metal + the Phase of Completion

For many years, understanding of the Metal element eluded me. And then, for five years, I lived this season in my own life and in time fell in love with its wisdom. Metal is the place of completion in the Five Element cycle, and it is a particular kind of wisdom that can only be acquired through completion. It has seen the seasons that came before it. It has weathered the storms. By the time we arrive at Metal, we are no longer asking what can be created, but what remains when a cycle has run its course—and what is worth carrying forward.

The trees teach us this. In autumn, the landscape appears to be dying, but beneath that apparent death, life is concentrating itself. The tree draws its resources inward, retaining only what it will need to sustain itself through winter while releasing what it no longer needs. The leaves fall, decompose, and return to the earth. The fruit rots and releases the seed held within it. Nothing is wasted. What appears to be death is part of the preparation for new life. The rotting fruit is Metal of autumn; the seed is the Water of winter.

This is the alchemy of Metal: not simply letting go, but discerning what belongs to the next cycle.

In our own lives, autumn offers the same invitation—to take stock of what experience has taught us, to recognize what has become essential, and to allow what is complete to come to an end. Metal reminds us that life is precious in part because it is impermanent; seasons change, chapters close, and not everything is ours to hold onto forever. Herein, Metal also teaches us grief. There is wisdom in recognizing what has mattered and allowing that knowledge to shape our path and perspective. In the natural world around us, what appears to be an ending is also preparing the way for what comes next.

Perhaps this is the particular wisdom of autumn: new life does not always begin by adding more. Sometimes it begins with allowing something to reach its natural end. We release what has served its purpose, preserve what is essential, and trust what remains to carry us into the cycle ahead. The landscape may look empty for a time, but emptiness is not the end of the story.
